The Problem
Generally it’s good if pipelines don’t move, but pipes can vibrate from just internal flow. When a long-dormant cross-over pipe was about to be used, the client needed to make sure that vibration levels would be acceptable.
Our Approach
We created a dynamic, harmonic finite element model of the crossover system to simulate operational stresses and predict a fatigue life. Dynamic pressure excitation was taken from measured vibration data, in conjunction with a study of excitation sources.
The Results
The study showed that the procedure could be done without excessive stress. Subsequently, the customer performed the operation in full safety.
